The Evaporation of the Earth

I am on a plane, again,

Flying over your gardens of green

And heavenly mountains-

Looking more like hollow hills from here,

It appears we are chasing

The last light of day

As East leaves West

Before finally we are pitched

Into an abyss of blackness

As the world disappears

And I wonder

If we are all who are left;

Flying forwards towards a forsaken future,

Gaining only on the remaining hours,

Oblivious to

The Evaporation of the Earth.

I look around to see who will be

Mother, Lover, Brother now,

Who will be friend

And which will be foe.

Who will scream first,

Freak first,

Break first.

Who will see the unseen that I have seen?

Will hunger harm us

Or fuel fade first

As we fly,

Fall

And fade

Over an Evaporated Earth.

We Never Saw Forever

No more sorrys,

No more words

No more time.

No more pretending

That this is working

Our days are gone.

No more waiting

For those calls

That seldom came.

No more arms

Wrapped around me

While I sleep.

No more breath

Upon my shoulder

As I dream.

No more questions

For our future

We had none.

No more hope

For a life together

Now it’s gone.

No more kisses

To last forever

They never did.

How could our kisses

Last forever

When we never did?

Thank you, Nana

We carried you,

Like a child, that day

As Spring shone around us

And the flowers took bloom

And I wondered if April

Had ever seen so soft a day?

We carried you,

Like a child, that day

And traced each and every journey

We’d made with you along the way,

On busses and trains and airplanes

To foreign towns and holy lands-

Your presence more beloved than the coins you always gave.

We carried you,

Like a child, that day

And remembered

Every knee you had bandaged,

Every tear you had dried

And every belly you had filled

With your apple pies and custard bakes

Fresh brown breads and coffee cakes.

We carried you,

Like a child, that day

As red roses fell

As fluidly as the waters over Niagara

While a breeze brushed our cheeks with a kiss.

We carried you,

Like a child, that day

Your body as weightless

As it was lifeless

While we covered you over with the red petaled ground-

But now we carry you in our hearts forever more.

Mistake me not;

This is no goodbye,

This is just a simple way of saying thank you.

A SCENT OF THE PAST

I caught your scent
on the breeze today
as a stranger passed me
on a foreign street,
in a foreign land
and I fell,
a decade in the passing,
till there you were;
beside me, behind me,
inside me,
piercing my memory
with Parisian pleasures,
show-tunes and sunflowers
on this foreign street,
in this foreign land
that had never known
the wealth
or weight
of our love.
I caught your scent
on the breeze today
and was reminded
of all I won’t let go.

Spring Cleaning

Spring cleaning

As fresh white snow falls by the window.

Spring cleaning;

Filling countless boxes of memories

To be covered up in cupboards,

Hoovering up all you left behind

In corners too tricky to tackle.

Spring cleaning,

Polishing over reflections in mirrors

Of the many moments we made

And washing the bedclothes over and over

And entrusting the rest for time to fade.

Spring cleaning,

In December, with icicle eyes

As snows of white cover the world and its sighs.

Fidgeting thoughts

Reaching deeper into the mind
to disregard the frivolous poetic
dribble of infantile days, with intent
to extract hidden meanings behind
the restlessness recently found
in the momentary sway from elated
joy of comforting freedom
to the languorously sleepy
life passing-by complacency
that occasionally drifts in as life
drifts by while I slumber. Is it enough
to be alone again; to comfort myself,
to pleasure myself, please myself?
What is this numbness newly found
within while without I fuss, fidget
and fumble, decorate, dawdle
and doodle, bake, bath and binge.
