He took the light
wrapped himself around it
as the rain fell outside
as the machine beeped
in the room next to him
the same monotonous sound
unchanging, unending, eternal
He took the light
held it to his body
as the darkness fell outside
as the machine beeped
in the room next to him
the same hypnotic motion
sounding, stopping, sounding, stopping
He took the light
down beneath the covers
as if light could conquer darkness
as if light could elevate illness
while all the world was sleeping
but the machine kept on beeping
calling, signalling, coming closer
He took the light
before the light took him…
All Words and Photographs by Damien B. Donnelly
I like this one a lot. The repetition, instead of being reassuring, gives an impression of impending disaster.
Thank you Jane. I was hoping to mount a little fear as it moved along. Happy new year to you and I waved hello to the Liffey for you in Dublin.
Aw, thank you! The turn the weather’s taken here, the Liffey seems to have come to me to wave back 🙂
This is absolutely beautiful! What inspires you to write poetry?
Thank you Charley. With poetry, I like both the fluidity and the restriction- you have so few words to convey your thoughts that you have to choose so carefully what you say and how you say it and yet still it requires a creativity in it’s expression and the actual placement of every word. Poetry has always been a cathartic part of my life too- it’s almost like self therapy! Thank you for coming by to read.
Loved the poem and the photography: I can see the inspiration is both in the eye and in the ear, most of all in the heart . . .
Thanks Peter, the photography comes very much from the city and its unending inspiration- I can’t even go for a run without being stopped by one thing or another needing to be photographed. I left so much of my heart here in Paris when I left at 23 to move to London so I guess it works better now that I’m back again. A certain completion

Hi,
I like your poem about the light. Eerie graphic that perfectly matches it.
Congratulations on being Danny Ray’s featured blogger! I was his featured blogger too! Maybe you’ll check out my site if you need a blogging tip or two; that’s what I write about.

Thank you Janice for dropping by- I will check out your blog today. Best wishes, damien
